 The Open Systems Advantage

Profitool software is built on the blueprint of Open Systems Architecture. Open Systems differ from proprietary systems in a number of ways. These differences have profound consequences for construction companies because, historically, low margins have prevented construction firms from leveraging information technologies to the greatest extent. Now, with the advent of powerful, inexpensive systems, data becomes a strategic resource, increasing the competitiveness of your organization.

Advantages of Open Systems:
  • Significant Cost Savings - Open Systems are less expensive for a given level of performance. The cost of computing on Open Systems is declining faster than on proprietary architectures. Hardware and software maintenance costs are comparatively lower as well.

  • Independence - Your company's software and hardware vendors have to work to keep your business because they know that you are free to change sources under the Open Systems Model. The pace of innovations is rapid as suppliers strive to maintain customer loyalty with superior products and services.

  • Portability/Scalability - Open Systems applications operate on a wide variety of platforms by adhering to standards. The hardware component of an Open System is typically founded on a processor design that can scale from a small, single-user workstation to a large, multiprocessor mainframe-class system, all running the same application software. Profitool software runs on Intel x86 architecture servers using the Linux Operating System, Hewlett Packard 9000 series servers running HP-UX and on IBM's RS/6000 servers running AIX. Profitool also supports Digital Unix on the DEC Alpha platform (now Compaq Tru64 Unix). Other platforms are under development.

  • Interoperability - The Open System revolution has brought with it the notion that applications should share relevant data. By adhering to standards, this is much more easily accomplished than under the proprietary module. Choose from the broadest range of cooperative applications to build a total information processing solution.

Parliament House
